Online business has become big business, and research (Roy Morgan, December 2011) has revealed that more women than ever are using the internet to get the information they need and the goods and services they want. In a recent interview, Australian author and online marketing mentor for women, Fiona Lewis, identified this as an ideal market for her students to target.
In her 2011 book, Mumpreneurs Online: Exposed, Ms Lewis revealed some of the many ways in which women, particularly stay at home mums, were creating online businesses that allowed them the work/life balance they needed. Such was the response that she established a membership site Mentoring Mums Online to help more women embrace the opportunities that online business delivers.
Identifying a needy niche and a target market to whom they can relate is one of the core teachings of Ms Lewis.
The Roy Morgan study, revealed that 8.30 million women, across all ages, go online each month. However, Ms Lewis has more finely targeted the 40-50 year old group as being key prospects for her students, a group that bears that falls within the age group identified in advertising parlance as Generation Jones (those born between 1954 and 1965).
It is a group that fits between Baby Boomers and the GenYs.
Generation Jones women are internet savvy - they are into social media, which is great for modern word-of-mouth referrals, explained Ms Lewis. As well, and perhaps as a result, they are more in touch with and influencers of, their kids in the very desirable 15-19 age group.
Ms Lewis believes that because Mentoring Mums Online is a community for online marketing women, women who often fall within the Generation Jones group, having an understanding of this key market is a big advantage to them.
We understand the challenges, wants and needs of this demographic. We know that they dont want to be patronised, nor are they easy prey to unscrupulous or unethical pitches, products and advertising, she said. They have expanded their social networks more than any generation before them, and are reconnecting with school friends, relatives and acquaintances all around the world. The value of their word of mouth referrals is immense.
Through Mentoring Mums Online, Fiona Lewis provides up to the minute marketing and strategic execution advice to her students. More information is available at.....
