Amanda Raines, retail consultant at Cole Systems in Manhattan and one of the retail industrys emerging experts on loyalty, addressed numerous topics on a new podcast on retail thought leadership site Whats Next Retail. Raines addressed three big trends retailers are tackling including the impact of show rooming, daily deals, and recalls.
On the podcast, Raines addressed some of the major challenges facing retailers today. One of the biggest challenges shes seeing right now is the phenomenon called show rooming, or scan and scram. This is becoming a very large issue for retailers because theyre finding if they dont have a successful online play or if their prices are higher than other retailers online, theyre losing customers, she said. Its becoming hard to combat this issue without being able to just drop your prices, which obviously is not always the preferred option.
Raines said one way retailers are combatting this is by offering products that cannot be found anywhere else, by obtaining exclusive contracts with manufacturers who solely sell in their stores, or by offering in-store-only coupons where you have to come in and purchase the products in the store.
Raines also addressed product recalls and the constant flow of information that is available online. Im interested to see how this is going to affect retailers, when people can easily find out the good and bad in their products at their fingertips. How is this going to harm companies whose products are perhaps not the best for consumers
